A SILENT SONG

»

Weekly Writing Challenge: The Sound of Silence.

This week , I’m going to narrate a story for this unique challenge! Enjoy” The silent song”!

A SILENT SONG

The atmosphere was enchanting and vibrant in the lush green orchard where birds were swinging and the tiny colorful butterflies kept dancing from one branch to another. The clear blue sky allowed the golden sun to reach and kiss the ground quietly without any obstacle and hustle. The plantation had abundant mangoes hanging on the long branches and the fragrance of the ripe and raw ones filled the surrounding atmosphere. Faraway an old record was being played which acted as a background score to the scene.

“on every flower he perches,
 dances, on every bud,
the garden echoes with the song
of nightingale…
my heart thus sings the melody
of a hidden blush!”

Binodini struggled to clear off the crumpled corners of the yellow ochre cotton saree which she wore. Pulling aside an end of the saree, she tucked the pallu to her front. She tried to reach the visible fruit that had gained her attraction. The sweet mango which was about to ripe and was still somewhat raw.

She kept on jumping trying to grab the yellow one that camouflaged with her saree.

The cuckoo loved her leaps and continued to sing her melody.

The dense mango orchard now echoed with the sound of her anklets, resounding every tinkling sound like a melodious euphony.

He watched the young maiden from far off. The saffron coloured tone of her skin was visible as her wrapped saree slid for few seconds… He looked in another direction. It could not hold his thoughts for long and he looked back again at Binodini.

She was still in the orchard, now sitting on the mat that was spread on the ground beneath the big mango tree. Her locks of hair flowed down in a gentle cascade and she hummed few lines, which he wasn’t able to hear. Although her moving lips indicated, she was singing.

As he tried to divert his attention from the young maiden, her magnetism pulled him more towards her. Although he had denied accompanying her to the orchard, his thoughts and mind did go along with her. Her formal disposition towards him had made him more uncomfortable. She still seemed to have the same innocence which he had seen in her eyes a decade ago. The gleam in her vision had the same sparkle that could make people envy of her contented nature and cheerfulness, despite all the glitches and snags of life.

All these years she had never tried to contact him nor did her behavior show any signs of grudge against him for not accepting her in his life.

Sanjay tried to avoid the intermingling thoughts, yet they seem to overpower his intellect and mind.

Few years ago, when his father had brought the proposal of Binodini to him, he had brushed aside the proposal without a second thought. The reason he gave was, he wasn’t ready for the marriage and would think on it after he returns from his higher studies and when his ambitious career reaches its goal while he went on the forthcoming foreign trip.

He liked Binodini, but always felt she was no match to his intellectual views and perceptions. At that time, she was just fifteen and her bubbly carefree nature made him think, she wasn’t the right candidate for marriage .Although he knew, Binodini liked him too and their parents had decided their marriage in childhood. He felt it to be an imprisonment of life living his whole life with a person who wasn’t up to his mark and status.

The two had been childhood friends and knew each other since they were just three.Binodini always had a dream of being companion of Sanjay and she always helped him through any endeavor and commitment.

His parents knew she would be the perfect girl for their family and that she had the charm and the elegance of being a wife of an educated man.

Sanjay left for Australia to pursue his higher education and to give strength to his wings of ambition. Soon he graduated and did his post-graduation in business administration, where he met Sofia, the blue-eyed girl.

He fell head over heels in love with her and she too started liking him. Within few months, they both had shifted to a new house to stay together.Back home, nobody knew about their living in relationship and they still kept on asking Sanjay about the marriage. He kept on denying and delaying the proposal by giving some excuse or another. Even though his parents tried to reason, Sanjay was least bothered to listen and never tried to go back to his home place even after years as he remained busy with his newly found attraction Sofia.

Sofia who was pursuing her doctor’s degree in political science was very keen in her studies and she always focused on her ambition above anything else. She was a bright student and was attractive. Unlike the village maidens, she was far more advanced and had an open outlook towards life.

Sanjay loved his freedom and was happy to get rid of the continous nagging of his parents.

Sofia continued studying even after she completed her doctorate and always remained busy in her scholarly research and groups. This left very little time with her to pay attention to their home.

Gradually Sanjay started doing all the household chores and didn’t get enough time to focus on his work. He liked to do everything for her but in this due course his work suffered. His earnings and savings got exhausted on large bills of Sofia’s education and socializing. Yet he was too mad for her and was happy to her with him.

Years passed and Sofia was now , no longer interested in the attachment and relation with Sanjay She fancied the attention that she got from her colleagues in her professional circle. Though she liked Sanjay, he felt she was not as emotional or sensitive as he had been in the relation.

And one fine day, she packed her bags to suddenly shock Sanjay and announced,  “Iam leaving for United States. I got a good job and an amazing career awaiting for me there. Without a grumble, Sanjay just shook his head and he knew, she never meant to be with him for a whole life.

Her decision left him alone, stranded and abandoned at the crossroads. He lost everything there and then, his money, reputation, respect, job, confidence and love. She meant business and she did it well.

Months later, he got discharged from the hospital. He had fallen directly on the adjacent lampshade and his ears bled as he lay there unconscious throughout the night. He didn’t realize that he was in the hospital since the last fifteen days and was in coma. The fall had hurt his nerve on his head. He rejoined office after a couple of days, but wasn’t able to concentrate on his work and had to take a break. .

At that crucial juncture, he decided to visit his village the following summer, as he had been away from his home since years. Today he needed the support and presence of his family and friends, when he was left all alone. And after ten years he came back to the lanes of his old place.

Today he stood in the balcony of their bungalow and was watching Binodini, trying to take off his eyes from her. She was the adored member of his family and neighbourhood, for she had rose above the level and had touched the greater skies.

The previous day ,his father wanted to know about his intentions on his life and career.

He didn’t have much to say; as his ideas had been wiped off the moment he came to know of Binodini being married to his younger brother.

He had shelved his dwelling and establishment there abroad and had planned to settle in India. He had guessed,Binodini might have been still single and that her family would be delighted to see him comeback after years.

After all he was the favourite and the most intelligent boys of the village then. He had an appealing personality and everyone was proud of his achievements.

Yet today he was lost. Lost and forgotten in the folds of time by everyone, even Binodini. How had he missed her striking persona and overlooked her charming presence. Had he agreed to his father’s proposal years back, things would have been completely different.

A very well-known song was being broadcasted on the radio that night and someone from his family had exclaimed, “Oh! This is Bou di’s (new daughter in law’s ) song!”

Everyone was smiling and one of them turned up the volume. Sanjay was lost in his thoughts.

He was expressionless,as if he hadn’t heard anything.

Like her immaculate beauty, she was today known for the wonderful lyrics those, which adorned the Bengali cinema and music.

Sanjay had been surprised to learn about this development about her life and was curious since when had she started writing couplets and verses? He had never known about it.

How was she discovered and found by the people from the makers of Bengali cinema and  then crowned with a grand splendor? Did she ever understood what people talked about her or how her lyrics turned out to be? He was curious to know everything about her that had made her so unique.

His thoughts suddenly came out of his imagination as Binodini slipped off while jumping.

He saw her getting up and in her hands was the half-ripe, half raw mango, which she was eyeing and trying for since the last half an hour. Instead of eating, she held it in her hands and brought it close to her ears. What was she doing?

Was there anything that she wanted to hear?

Then slowly she moved it to her nose and sniffed it.

What was she upto?He thought.

Meanwhile she went near the tree and laid her ears on the bark as if trying to hear some sound, and then she placed her soft palm on the trunk of the mango tree and smiled.

She had felt the pulse of the silent tree standing there since ages.

Within minutes she scribbled few lines,

“I look at you in awe O! Wondrous wonder!
Your fruition is so enchantingly aromatic
Why are you quiet
like my mute lips,
through the rustle of your leaves
 I can see and feel…
in silence I can sense your joy and ecstasy!!!”

The following night during dinner, he read an article about her in the newspaper.

One of the questions that he read echoed in his mind.

It said, “How do you manage to write such lyrics which have the fine intrinsic notes of sound of nature and feelings? How do you manage to discover this beauty?

Her reply was, “Destiny has deprived me of two important senses of sound and speech, yet my remaining senses reach out to the inner voice of nature and get communicated through the rhythm of life. I try to find out the melody of every beat that plays in the heart of each living being by touch. I can hear that melody in every heartbeat and pulse. For me, even if my physical being, disallows me to hear and speak, yet I am able to articulate through my words and verses. I can feel the throbbing of every heart through my perception and touch.Nature conveys in its own distinct mute language to me the truth of its eternal splendor.”

He could never guess or realize what her value was, then, years ago and here she was today, one of the prominent personalities of Bengal.

The famous lyricist, Binodini, who was born deaf and dumb, yet touched skies of glory and impossible through her simple nature and efforts.

She was now Sandeep’s wife, his sister-in-law.

Someone called his name from far off and he stood motionless and still.

He had lost his sense of hearing during the fall, which had paralyzed and left him hospitalized for days, way back in Australia.

Destiny has its own  unique way  and when its  blow strikes anyone its severe yet silent.

THE MAGIC

Magic in words, magic in expressions, magic in the air, magic in the magic wand!

Everything fascinates us that is created by magic .

Flowers emerging from nowhere,or stars in broad daylight!

Wonder how magic affects us! We look in awe at the magic that takes place around us ,but sometimes forget to admire the real magic.

The magic of the sun rising every morning without failing since centuries and ages. The moon shining in the dark skies in its own cycle without fail. The fragrance of the millions of flowers that fill our senses with exuberant joy.

The ceaseless flow of the innocent river and the wrath of  flooded water in fury ,every aspect of this creation has the power of endless magic that is exceptional and exclusive, which no one else can copy or enact!

What a wondrous creation and how wonderful beings we are!

If I  , as a human had been granted special powers to be able to do some magic!

Wonder what I shall do or can do!

I can change the earth, I can change the universe,

yet I opt to change the condition of this world…

To repaint the colours of humanity on the canvas of this world,on the hearts of the stone hearted ones,

to sketch the drawing of being a human on every soul, which has forgotten that it is a living being like another,

to infuse in every spirit the zeal of love and compassion, which shall endeavour them to take bigger challenges

and strive for better results in every effort,

to erase the word “discrimination”,from the dictionary of minds

to delete the existence of poverty from every nook and corner of the world,

to unfurl the flag of peace in every nation, wiping out wars between countries and people.

This is and shall be the greatest magic ever done !

DAILY PROMPT : LUXURIOUS

What’s the one luxury you can’t live without?

Daily Prompt: Luxurious.

Won’t  it be great when we own everything that we desire for or wish of possessing !!!

Simultaneously it is as boring as a dead bird, for our dreams die the moment we acquire it…Life is a beautiful journey which continuous to excite and enthrall us with its ever surprising bends and incidents. The adventure of crossing such unseen hurdles and reaching the top has its own enjoyment.

Ever thought ,why mountaineering or trekking is exciting and interesting, for we  view the world around us with a  different perspective  while walking on the path . The courage of moving without looking back , the fearless thought of reaching the peak adds to our character a dab of dynamism. The scenery which we perceive  looks  new and charming. We enjoy every level of the difficult path and our each breath to the fullest. The enthusiasm to attain the goal is more while we are struggling to accomplish it than when we actually reach it.

It is this effort that drives us on the path of our life with zeal. The luxuries of life can provide comfort to our physical body for sometime ,but in long run they fail to keep our zest . The essence lies within ,the  happiness that we feel and experience is the most treasured and cannot be bought .It is in fact a luxury.

For luxury doesn’t mean to acquire something by paying money for it. It is n’t the cushion on the cuddling sofa,or the lampshade at the corner, neither the penthouse in a posh locality, nor the swimming pool inside the apartment that gives us immense pleasure…

it is the life ,the fresh breath of life which is the true luxury!

For my soul, ” To breathe freely, is to live in luxury!

It is the sense of excitement that we get from small things which gives us the extreme satisfaction and contentment.

Imagine  what a luxury it would be ,to sleep amidst the tulips, watching the clouds float over the blue skies, the butterflies dancing on the fingers and the soft breeze swaying the hair.A tiny cottage  of wood, where fresh air would be the exotic air conditioner and chirping of birds would be the song of the morning different for every season…

Daily prompt: Iam a Rock!

Written for : Daily Prompt: I Am a Rock.

Obsessed with self ,a person never tries to acknowledge his shortcomings or his flaws. A rather typical nature of a human to remain aloof and shelved within the hard shell when in times of distress or sadness.

Many are known to crib all along the life about every  happening  . Else they get into the habit of mumbling to draw attention to their minutest details.

Every individual has a special characteristic and his own unusual way of dealing with times of strife.

I have come across many people who have been rather different in their upheaval times.

The characteristic of every man depends on the type of life he/she has lead and the way he/she has been brought up.

The upbringing ,the mental blocks and the social involvement of a person shapes his/her disposition. The cruel and sour remarks of people,or outrageous behaviour of some, sweet gentle nature or the suspicious trait visible through the thick dark wall are all results of such experiences.

Asking for help or allowing people to help you is also a kind of courageous act which requires much humbleness and resilience in you which can bear the burden of accepting help from others. For such a behaviour in your view is like ,you are incapable of sorting out things,or it would simply show your weak nature.

Such negative thinkings disallow people to share their thoughts and problems with others just for the sake ,what would others think ?

But humanity is a bigger canvas and small things as such don’t paint the picture as we think.

It is the sense of gratitude that would allow us to share our thoughts with others . It brings the compassionate nature of us and reminds us at every juncture to take care of every other individual that we come across in life who is in  distress.

“Even if I stood like a rock under the scorching sun

without a shade or a river to quench my thirst

yet  I owe my gratitude to the Almighty

for showering few drops of rain

to grace me with the endurance

face the rough weather….”

So even if we do not accept help from others ,there has been some assistance provided to us in a disguise which we need to recognize and realize .

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

Haven’t we all gone through this stage when we had to opt for the road that is less traveled?

What instances and conditions succumb us to make this decision is always interesting ,motivating or fascinating?

Often we like to traverse on the path where we see thousands of feet stamped over the loose dust and the one road that is left behind is always the one which is never tried, thought or imagined of being traveled through?Like the one in the forest,or the path down the hillock?

In life we come across such decisions which are taken abruptly instantly without a second thought for the sake of being done.

Some of them are right for the future and few are just not happening.

What makes us opt for such path ?

For any decision in life be it small or big,we need to be convinced in our self .We should trust the thought that makes the decision.

For a situation when there is a critical condition in life,we should weigh the pros and cons first.List the number of advantages and disadvantages of it. We should think, imagine and contemplate the situation before giving our voice. Prior to voice the decision ,we have to be fully convinced in what we are doing and once the decision is made, there should not be any looking back.Come what may,the fight and the struggle should take us beyond past every obstacle and then only our decision to go by the road less traveled will be fulfilled truly and successfully.

Daily Prompt: The Road Less Traveled.

JOURNEY OF KNOWING SELF

tumblr_mom9pbasdm1s83v8no1_1280

Beyond the comprehension of a common man’s mind and perception, the road to the mountains of the Divine  had appeared in my dreams.

It wasn’t a fantasy nor an illusion, even though I forgot about the mystical dream very soon as I woke up.

The next day again I resumed my journey from the place where I had stopped. I stopped for a moment, gasping and feeling breathless. As I managed to look above for few drops of water that would quench my dried throat,I got  mesmerized with envelope of the luminous clouds and aura of the atmosphere. I forgot about my pain and my aches.

The view was scintillating and it absorbed all the pangs of my bruised self.

For a moment I traveled beyond the realms of earth and had reached the doorsteps of Divine, then I remembered the journey is yet to be completed.

And for a second I turned around to see what was there that I had left behind on this spiritual journey.

A silhouette ,I saw for a flash second and it vanished and dissolved in the zephyr as if it never existed.

My eyes got misty, seeing the footsteps that were trailing behind me and I recollected the words , “Keep walking my child. The journey is yours and you have to travel alone, while on this path of truth and wisdom for the journey of reaching Divine is the truth of knowing self …I am with you every moment, whenever you fall or need me,I shall be there to hold you with care. Trust your faith and walk.Never look back, for that would mean ,you have lost your belief in me and whenever you do so,I will vanish.

You will have to restart your journey then, from the initial stage to reach the destination .”

DAILY PROMPT: MOTHER NEVER RETIRES

When you’re unwell, do you allow others to take care of you, or do you prefer to soldier on alone? What does it take for you to ask for help?

THE GOLDEN SUNSET
THE GOLDEN SUNSET

The evening was perfect when we strolled on the cooling sands of the beautiful beach. At sunset ,it was one of  the most preferred places ,people here chose to be on. Leaving aside the crowd and the noise ,the sound of falling waves always fascinated me too like others.

The winters had begun and the cool breeze now had started becoming more stronger.

enjoying music while coming back.
enjoying music while coming back.

We came back after a sumptuous dinner at the favorite food joint which served exotic delicacies on weekends. It was always normal to retire to bed around 1 in the night while on weekends…

The next morning it was all late and to my dismay,I was feeling dizzy. Very unlike me,I usually awoke early morning with the breakfast ready and the house almost cleared and cleaned.
My eyes had become watery and I was sneezing . For God’s sake, did I catch up the cold? No, shouldn’t be now,the elder is having his exams from tomorrow.

It is always said a mother never retires from her work unless fallen sick. But to be sick at this time, when my hubby is supposed to go out on a business trip and my son having his 1st term exams ,it looked quite disappointing.

Soon I got fever and it rose to 102F ! I was burning and everyone in the house got panicked.

Usually its my screaming which makes them move and finish their work on schedule. But today I lay silent ,with almost no noise .

I joked, you all must be happy for I won’t be pestering you around today. There was a slight grin on everyone’s face ,yet they were concerned about the work being done .

Following my instructions, hubby started working out in the kitchen for some breakfast for the kids.I was given medicine and I slept off. After weeks and months I felt I must have slept for 2 hrs at a stretch. After the birth of my daughter it was impossible to sleep beyond 2hrs at a stretch for she got up in every hour.

The fever had come down, but I was still down with the sore throat.

I could smell the aroma of soup being cooked and I was served a hot portion of the freshly made chicken soup while in bed.It was a treat for me,although I could not relish the dish nor the situation.

I asked my kids to finish their homework and clear off the rooms . The laundry still awaited my arrival and I had to instruct them to put the soiled ones for a wash.

my lil'one scribbling on old movie tickets!
my lil’one scribbling on old movie tickets!

The day went on with I playing the role of a n instructor, might be much more welcomed than the one I usually play of a ringleader.

Yet at the end of the day, everyone was tired and exhausted by the daily chores and weren’t in any mood to sit for long hours.

A day ,a holiday for them had ended and all felt sad about it being spoilt.

I hardly ever ask anyone for help when I fall sick,or get myself hurt as there is anyways no one around to have a look or understand what’s happening. But that day was different as everyone was at home and could see themselves .They had no other option but to help and complete the chores.Even though the next day,it was the same routine for me,in-spite I not being completely recovered. But that was real life.

I enjoy doing it for my family ,sometimes getting frustrated ,sometimes ,bit irritated, but that’s what makes it special.

But I guess a day when they switched over the role, they must have understood the fact that a mother never retires nor holidays, its work for her 24×7…

Daily Prompt: Take Care.

DAILY PROMPT: MY DESTINATION

A realm ,a place which would provide comfort to my senses, soothe my apprehensive mind and rejuvenate my being would be the perfect destination of a holiday for me!

Thousands advertisements pop up everytime I start my desktop trying to lure me on to their fascinating places having exotic beach and a five star treatment awaiting or an adventurous trip to an island through a cruise .

An offer so hard to resist where I get one night free boarding and lodging along with exclusive tour to the local places attracts me to hundreds of such places, Seychelles,Greece, Malaysia ..Nay! Iam confused !

What do I actually want ! An action packed tight scheduled adventurous trip or a relaxing siesta on a quiet beach…

Iam sure Robinson Crusoe would never had got such problem in choosing his destination ,nor Huckleberry Finn!

The picturesque images carry me to the places in an instant and I can really feel the atmosphere of the tour then and there itself. But lo! I have to know how jingles can we afford to spend on such a journey!

Half of the selected list thus gets scratched out owing to their exotic prices! 🙂

Few get deleted due to the season there which we aren’t comfortable in!

Leaving apart one or two ,there is ideally no choice left for having a wonderful vacation.

But wait ,who said these are the only places where we can have a memorable time! There weren’t any such tourist destinations known to us earlier nor any ads popping every second!

We still went out to exotic destinations… which were undiscovered, hidden and untouched by the cruel hands of human…. And what days were they! an adventure in a nearby forest, an impulsive trip to an unknown destination. A car journey of 1000kms without any bookings nor schedule…

IMG_0381

Just to get a bag packed with essential belongings, few snacks stacked well with juice and water cans…the fuel tank filled , tyre pressures checked and we hopped inside to go for an exciting tour!

The tourist trap of ads never affected then, nor can it now!

For the mind wants to rest for a while and the heart loves to sit beside!

Every bit of nature fascinates when both of them are relaxed and fine!

IMG_0295 IMG_0300

I personally love to go on car rides to far distances with my family, the favourite music playing and the giggling of kids along!

A stopover at a lonely beach ,the sunset watched through the car window while driving to the destination…

IMG_0380

The pitch dark night silently singing tunes with the stars along the road…

A sumptuous dinner on a local restaurant along the highway! What else one can dream of!

By midnight when we have actually got tired of switching in  place of driver ,the urge of finding a quiet motel …

The icing on the cake is there when we find a beautiful resort or a motel with surprisingly good amenities!

The cuddling of everyone in a single bed after a hectic traveling , this is the perfect holiday for me with smiles worth waiting and watching!

Daily Prompt: Tourist Trap.
