Give me back, my love!

Last summer it hadn’t been that difficult, even though the weather cycle has shifted and now seasons no longer arrive on time. Obviously seasons hardly proclaim their arrival,it’s the nature which speaks on the behalf of its beloved.

The frost covered ivy leaves and the white sheet of luminous pearls on vast expanse announces the winter days. Even though the chilled breeze cuts through the veins , its tingling sensation brings pleasure.

Aman never noticed how seasons change . Oh! but neither he noticed any change in Ria.

So what? Thought she! She couldn’t possibly make all the efforts and take the stress of not being closer to him. She got attention from the rest of the world, so did she really cared for this?

Somewhere inside, she did. It wasn’t that easy to let life slip off so easily from her hands.Yet she couldn’t force or change anything. “What was wrong in me”? often Ria thought.Even though they were classmates and sat next to each other, he seldom glanced on her. They hardly spoke to one another and when in a group, he usually avoided talking to her.

This irritated Ria more and she tried to find out the real reason behind the coldness.

That evening was a memorable one when graduation day neared and juniors had planned for a farewell party. Winter had arrived, unnoticed.

It was snowy all around and the valley was lit with intermittent fireplaces at many places. The fir trees had on their tips the whiteness of love.

Yet love was missing in the hearts and was frozen.

In a white satin dress which kissed her toes ,Ria had let her hair loose. The tresses followed her till her waist and swayed gently as she moved. The red rose tucked in her hair near the ears was smiling vibrantly at every onlooker. As she entered the hall where the party was at its peak, eyes followed her everywhere, but her eyes searched for someone else.

She couldn’t see Aman anywhere and got desperate. For hours she waited ,yet he was nowhere to be seen. Her heart sank and she at last realized, he had never loved her. It was her misunderstanding or her premature thoughts which made her feel that someday he would confess.

Last year when the college students went for trekking camp, things were different. Aman was still aloof even though around, but she had discovered his stolen glances on her. Out of any pretext, he had tried to touch her several times and her eyes blushed. That fateful night while the camp was asleep, in the mid of night, she heard a rustle nearby. Apprehending it to be an animal, she was going to scream when a palm slid onto her mouth. She gasped.

“ Shh. Do not speak” , signaled the shadow.

She could feel his warm fingers over her neck and around her lips. It was a moment that melted her for ages.

“What is it?” the trainer shouted from outside.

“Who’s there?”

“Nothing Sir”, replied Ria.She was confused over the appearance of a stranger in her tent at this hour of night, but something resisted her to speak about it in front of everyone.

*************************************************************************

Today it was the last day of college and she would be leaving this place forever, how could Aman not be here? Her sixth sense had deceived her. Aman had never loved her.

She left the celebration hall quickly and started walking through the thick layer of snow. Her feet were getting numb and the cold had frozen her fingers. Her eyes cried in sadness over the indifference and tears rolled down.

Within few minutes , she became unconscious and fell down.

Hours later , when she opened her eyes, Ria was confused to find herself in a new place. Her head was still reeling and she was wrapped inside a thick fur blanket. The wooden walls were strangers and the only lamp hung on the corner of the room was lighting the cosy place.

“Where am I?”

Suddenly she saw a silhouette coming near. In awe, she became speechless.

The silhouette sat near her and directed her hair-locks from her face behind her ears. The caress of the touch was warm and the same. She had known this touch very vividly. Her heart pounded faster as the shadow bent and pressed on her lips. For a moment , he withdrew, but Ria realized.

It was love which had been relived by the touch. She whispered in his ears, “#Bring back the touch.Give me back my love”.

A SILENT SONG

»

Weekly Writing Challenge: The Sound of Silence.

This week , I’m going to narrate a story for this unique challenge! Enjoy” The silent song”!

A SILENT SONG

The atmosphere was enchanting and vibrant in the lush green orchard where birds were swinging and the tiny colorful butterflies kept dancing from one branch to another. The clear blue sky allowed the golden sun to reach and kiss the ground quietly without any obstacle and hustle. The plantation had abundant mangoes hanging on the long branches and the fragrance of the ripe and raw ones filled the surrounding atmosphere. Faraway an old record was being played which acted as a background score to the scene.

“on every flower he perches,
 dances, on every bud,
the garden echoes with the song
of nightingale…
my heart thus sings the melody
of a hidden blush!”

Binodini struggled to clear off the crumpled corners of the yellow ochre cotton saree which she wore. Pulling aside an end of the saree, she tucked the pallu to her front. She tried to reach the visible fruit that had gained her attraction. The sweet mango which was about to ripe and was still somewhat raw.

She kept on jumping trying to grab the yellow one that camouflaged with her saree.

The cuckoo loved her leaps and continued to sing her melody.

The dense mango orchard now echoed with the sound of her anklets, resounding every tinkling sound like a melodious euphony.

He watched the young maiden from far off. The saffron coloured tone of her skin was visible as her wrapped saree slid for few seconds… He looked in another direction. It could not hold his thoughts for long and he looked back again at Binodini.

She was still in the orchard, now sitting on the mat that was spread on the ground beneath the big mango tree. Her locks of hair flowed down in a gentle cascade and she hummed few lines, which he wasn’t able to hear. Although her moving lips indicated, she was singing.

As he tried to divert his attention from the young maiden, her magnetism pulled him more towards her. Although he had denied accompanying her to the orchard, his thoughts and mind did go along with her. Her formal disposition towards him had made him more uncomfortable. She still seemed to have the same innocence which he had seen in her eyes a decade ago. The gleam in her vision had the same sparkle that could make people envy of her contented nature and cheerfulness, despite all the glitches and snags of life.

All these years she had never tried to contact him nor did her behavior show any signs of grudge against him for not accepting her in his life.

Sanjay tried to avoid the intermingling thoughts, yet they seem to overpower his intellect and mind.

Few years ago, when his father had brought the proposal of Binodini to him, he had brushed aside the proposal without a second thought. The reason he gave was, he wasn’t ready for the marriage and would think on it after he returns from his higher studies and when his ambitious career reaches its goal while he went on the forthcoming foreign trip.

He liked Binodini, but always felt she was no match to his intellectual views and perceptions. At that time, she was just fifteen and her bubbly carefree nature made him think, she wasn’t the right candidate for marriage .Although he knew, Binodini liked him too and their parents had decided their marriage in childhood. He felt it to be an imprisonment of life living his whole life with a person who wasn’t up to his mark and status.

The two had been childhood friends and knew each other since they were just three.Binodini always had a dream of being companion of Sanjay and she always helped him through any endeavor and commitment.

His parents knew she would be the perfect girl for their family and that she had the charm and the elegance of being a wife of an educated man.

Sanjay left for Australia to pursue his higher education and to give strength to his wings of ambition. Soon he graduated and did his post-graduation in business administration, where he met Sofia, the blue-eyed girl.

He fell head over heels in love with her and she too started liking him. Within few months, they both had shifted to a new house to stay together.Back home, nobody knew about their living in relationship and they still kept on asking Sanjay about the marriage. He kept on denying and delaying the proposal by giving some excuse or another. Even though his parents tried to reason, Sanjay was least bothered to listen and never tried to go back to his home place even after years as he remained busy with his newly found attraction Sofia.

Sofia who was pursuing her doctor’s degree in political science was very keen in her studies and she always focused on her ambition above anything else. She was a bright student and was attractive. Unlike the village maidens, she was far more advanced and had an open outlook towards life.

Sanjay loved his freedom and was happy to get rid of the continous nagging of his parents.

Sofia continued studying even after she completed her doctorate and always remained busy in her scholarly research and groups. This left very little time with her to pay attention to their home.

Gradually Sanjay started doing all the household chores and didn’t get enough time to focus on his work. He liked to do everything for her but in this due course his work suffered. His earnings and savings got exhausted on large bills of Sofia’s education and socializing. Yet he was too mad for her and was happy to her with him.

Years passed and Sofia was now , no longer interested in the attachment and relation with Sanjay She fancied the attention that she got from her colleagues in her professional circle. Though she liked Sanjay, he felt she was not as emotional or sensitive as he had been in the relation.

And one fine day, she packed her bags to suddenly shock Sanjay and announced,  “Iam leaving for United States. I got a good job and an amazing career awaiting for me there. Without a grumble, Sanjay just shook his head and he knew, she never meant to be with him for a whole life.

Her decision left him alone, stranded and abandoned at the crossroads. He lost everything there and then, his money, reputation, respect, job, confidence and love. She meant business and she did it well.

Months later, he got discharged from the hospital. He had fallen directly on the adjacent lampshade and his ears bled as he lay there unconscious throughout the night. He didn’t realize that he was in the hospital since the last fifteen days and was in coma. The fall had hurt his nerve on his head. He rejoined office after a couple of days, but wasn’t able to concentrate on his work and had to take a break. .

At that crucial juncture, he decided to visit his village the following summer, as he had been away from his home since years. Today he needed the support and presence of his family and friends, when he was left all alone. And after ten years he came back to the lanes of his old place.

Today he stood in the balcony of their bungalow and was watching Binodini, trying to take off his eyes from her. She was the adored member of his family and neighbourhood, for she had rose above the level and had touched the greater skies.

The previous day ,his father wanted to know about his intentions on his life and career.

He didn’t have much to say; as his ideas had been wiped off the moment he came to know of Binodini being married to his younger brother.

He had shelved his dwelling and establishment there abroad and had planned to settle in India. He had guessed,Binodini might have been still single and that her family would be delighted to see him comeback after years.

After all he was the favourite and the most intelligent boys of the village then. He had an appealing personality and everyone was proud of his achievements.

Yet today he was lost. Lost and forgotten in the folds of time by everyone, even Binodini. How had he missed her striking persona and overlooked her charming presence. Had he agreed to his father’s proposal years back, things would have been completely different.

A very well-known song was being broadcasted on the radio that night and someone from his family had exclaimed, “Oh! This is Bou di’s (new daughter in law’s ) song!”

Everyone was smiling and one of them turned up the volume. Sanjay was lost in his thoughts.

He was expressionless,as if he hadn’t heard anything.

Like her immaculate beauty, she was today known for the wonderful lyrics those, which adorned the Bengali cinema and music.

Sanjay had been surprised to learn about this development about her life and was curious since when had she started writing couplets and verses? He had never known about it.

How was she discovered and found by the people from the makers of Bengali cinema and  then crowned with a grand splendor? Did she ever understood what people talked about her or how her lyrics turned out to be? He was curious to know everything about her that had made her so unique.

His thoughts suddenly came out of his imagination as Binodini slipped off while jumping.

He saw her getting up and in her hands was the half-ripe, half raw mango, which she was eyeing and trying for since the last half an hour. Instead of eating, she held it in her hands and brought it close to her ears. What was she doing?

Was there anything that she wanted to hear?

Then slowly she moved it to her nose and sniffed it.

What was she upto?He thought.

Meanwhile she went near the tree and laid her ears on the bark as if trying to hear some sound, and then she placed her soft palm on the trunk of the mango tree and smiled.

She had felt the pulse of the silent tree standing there since ages.

Within minutes she scribbled few lines,

“I look at you in awe O! Wondrous wonder!
Your fruition is so enchantingly aromatic
Why are you quiet
like my mute lips,
through the rustle of your leaves
 I can see and feel…
in silence I can sense your joy and ecstasy!!!”

The following night during dinner, he read an article about her in the newspaper.

One of the questions that he read echoed in his mind.

It said, “How do you manage to write such lyrics which have the fine intrinsic notes of sound of nature and feelings? How do you manage to discover this beauty?

Her reply was, “Destiny has deprived me of two important senses of sound and speech, yet my remaining senses reach out to the inner voice of nature and get communicated through the rhythm of life. I try to find out the melody of every beat that plays in the heart of each living being by touch. I can hear that melody in every heartbeat and pulse. For me, even if my physical being, disallows me to hear and speak, yet I am able to articulate through my words and verses. I can feel the throbbing of every heart through my perception and touch.Nature conveys in its own distinct mute language to me the truth of its eternal splendor.”

He could never guess or realize what her value was, then, years ago and here she was today, one of the prominent personalities of Bengal.

The famous lyricist, Binodini, who was born deaf and dumb, yet touched skies of glory and impossible through her simple nature and efforts.

She was now Sandeep’s wife, his sister-in-law.

Someone called his name from far off and he stood motionless and still.

He had lost his sense of hearing during the fall, which had paralyzed and left him hospitalized for days, way back in Australia.

Destiny has its own  unique way  and when its  blow strikes anyone its severe yet silent.

17th January 2013

There has been a change in scenario in the past few days in Indian politics. Let it be the new power packed speech by Rahul Gandhi, or the storming invasion by the law minister of Delhi of  an area, which allegedly was running a sex and drug racket, for which he didn’t get any police support. The sudden death ofSsunanda Pushkar wife of Shashi Tharoor after few days controversy on social media about hacking accounts and stalking her husband. Be it the demise of the spiritual leader in Mumbai and the stampede that occurred during his funeral or the death of an old actress Suchitra Sen . The day in Indian history will be surely important for days to come which shall remind us of this day when we look back after few months from now. The fate and the future of India when  be decided in the forthcoming elections will remind us back of this particular day which marked its presence by so many colours and shades of politics so intensely.

THE MUSIC OF NATURE

The rhythm of life ,the vibration of a fluttering leaf, the thundering of clouds or the gushing of a flowing stream, this is the melodyThe Music of Nature.

Music of the eternal nature which can carry us for thousand miles without letting us know through the fragrance of the cool breeze and with the white bunch of clouds travelling.

Different lands it traverses, playing the beats of simple harmony, never can anything surpass this, the melodious symphony.

Music is the pulse of a throbbing heart, music is the love of the singing bauls, music is the quiver of the sitar strings, music is the cadence of the soul ,while it seeks divine.

Music is the muse of art,

 tone of a pitch,

stroke of a painting brush,

the creation of nature pristine,

in every breath,intones the music,

Eternal is thy ,when it becomes Divine.

“REPERCUSSION OF ITEM SONGS” – Listen to what a Mother says!

Here is the most debatable topic of today which has hit me too with its depth! We are all aware of the critical conditions of women living in India where every day there is news of rape or molestation many of which are not even reported.

Few days ago there was a general discussion going where people blamed the Indian cinema to be responsible for the ongoing situation of our country.

Obviously people from Bollywood did oppose this and gave a splendid explanation to it.

The look and the presentation of Indian cinema has changed a lot since its birth where in today it stands globally with movies getting released worldwide and having a wide audience all around the world. It has been 100 years of Indian cinema and there are numerous celebrations going on for it. For an audience which is spread internationally, there has to be something which appeals one and all to run the cost and to gain profits besides rendering art.

Our art segment which makes films different form the mainstream continually strives everyday to fight against the commercialization of art.

Art in any form if commercialized beyond the aesthetic sense appears vulgar. There is then no limit or borderline too such a creativity. Whether it should be termed as creativity or fantasy is a question really thinkable?

But never the less the way Indian movies have added item numbers or similar songs in the movies they seem to be very hungry for the attention of audience. As if without such songs it wasn’t possible to entertain the audience.

Leave aside the fact that entertainment can be anything and be of any type. We live in a free society and have freedom to watch anything or express myself. All these are mere reasons to convince self and not solid reasons to justify inclusion of such immoral acts.

We are free to choose what to see and what not, but our children and the teenagers do not have the same sense to distinguish what is right and wrong. Whether a movie gets an “A” certificate or and “UA” as parental guidance, the songs are very freely telecasted on channels available on television. The beats are catchy and the lyrics horribly vulgar, but due to these catchy tunes, they become the favorite of our children who are the primary viewers of TV nowadays. The age ranges from 2 to 16 yrs for after this age every child usually gets busier in his/her studies and concentrates more on career making or any other professional course or strives for a  normal way of living and survival.

I too enjoy the songs but with a fear in my mind what effect will this have on my son and my daughter who are going to be the responsible adults of tomorrow. Are we giving them good example of being a adult who will be morally right? Not that only these numbers are responsible for this, there are many umpteen reasons including the advertisements that are continuously shown on TV. But Iam considering just a single topic here!

Just watch these clips and realize what goes inside the mind of a child or a growing teenager when he watches this! No wonder there are enough songs available nowadays online and also on television.

http://youtu.be/qLUS2pDKmmc

http://youtu.be/q4Ob7OSLUyY

http://youtu.be/_CMBCfxN1lU

There are endless different things catered too freely on the internet and elsewhere, but does that justify our liking for indecent immoral behavior of our children when they step out in this world and try to copy such acts .

No wonder cases will always increase in rape and molestation when this is what is seen by millions, who is always consider the actors to be their idols !

Be a actress gyrating to vulgar steps with a notorious gangster,or group of actors teasing and wooing a single girl in a song!

This crucial time or age where the child develops his intelligence ,steps out of innocence and sees the world with a new perspective gets to see this every time and everywhere around. He notices the glamour and the glitch behind remains hidden. He tries to copy the behavior  of the so called idols of India, the actors and stars.

For a teenager, for a child such an exposure is detrimental as it invokes a certain level of misconceived adulation inside for the immoral actions.

Many have often reason to say that we should be free with our children and should give them the basic education regarding the unspoken taboos. But is this the real education, that we need to impart to our children. It is not about the people who are watching and enjoying this as a form of entertainment but it is the children who are watching and getting influenced by such derogatory and explicit actions.

Every mother should worry about the situation this creates when her child watches such a song and enjoys it without knowing its actual meaning and repercussions. For the music is now defamed by usage of such lyrics and dance steps.

Earlier such dances were a part done by vamps and the heroines always had a cleaner image to present, but nowadays the female leads have become more crazier to get involved in these thereby confusing the young minds who until now believed good should be different form bad and hence idolized the good character of a film.

Remember cinema is the real image of society and society too is the real image of cinema. Both are equally responsible for the wrongdoings in the society and are answerable to every citizen of India.

Just to say that movies are  a part of entertainment and it is us who have to decide whether we like it or not, is a mere explanation and does not excuse the people from their responsibility.

Music has always been considered divine by us. The effect of the musical instruments or the vocals ,it has the power to heal the ill and to rejuvenate the dull minds. Our music has a wide range  to effect the minds and hearts of the audience of the world.

If only we could use better lyrics, presentable dances to make it more worthy, a small change can be a cause to save millions of more soft innocent minds from falling into ravines !

With due respect the the fraternity of Indian cinema ,I would like to ask everyone to think for a moment and realize!

P.S . I avoided posting pictures about the same ,as it meant I too provoked the audience by posting those scenes.

The discussion is endless but efforts are always worth trying to forbid the worse!
